The time has come for the spot light to shine on one of my favorite culinary wonders - the garlic.
No one really knows its current age, some claim it existed for thousands of years (just like human stupidity, i'm sure), and it's even mentioned in the Bible (therefore it must be holly). It was/is used both in cooking as well as in healing. It is common knowledge that garlic helps prevent infection - this is due to a substance called "allicin" which acts as an antibiotic and antifungal (against bacteria and fungi).
It was also believed, back in the day, that if you put garlic around your doors and windows, keeps out the vampires. I seriously don't know where this came from, but it's soooo not true - take it from someone who lives in Transylvania. Not that I'm a vampire - not too friendly with blood. Still, it is believed to be a powerful tool against evil - vampires, demons, vicious boy/girlfriends. And if you stick a clove of garlic into the pot where you keep your favorite flower, it cleanses the soil of all those nasty little criters that damage the roots of your favorite chlorophyll-station. There is one down-fall to garlic however - if you eat a healthy dose of it, chances of being kissed are pretty slim (unless your partner has eaten some as well, then you're both happy). So you might consider your chances of eating some garlic before heading out for a hot date.
